Known by locals and Alberta residents as "Fort Mac", the city of Fort McMurray is located in north east Alberta, Canada, and is the largest urban community in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. 435 kilometres northeast of the Alberta Provincial Capital of Edmonton and only 60 kilometres from the Alberta-Saskatchewan border, Fort McMurray sits at the confluence of the Clearwater River and the mighty Athabasca River. Surrounded on all sides by boreal forest, Fort McMurray is a true northern city with cold winters and shorter warm summers, but it's lower elevation sometimes makes it a "hot spot" by comparison to the rest of the province.
With a population of over 76,000, Fort McMurray has gone through an extended boom period due largely to the increased production of the Athabasca Oil Sands. Between 2006 and 2012, the population of the area nearly doubled primarily because of the influx of petroleum and natural gas workers to the region, and by 2028 it is estimated the population will rise to around 133,000. During this boom time, Fort McMurray real estate was selling at a high premium.
